Introduction
Shinhan Finance Group includes more than seventeen companies. The project was for the four major businesses within the group -- Shinhan Bank, Shinhan Card, Shinhan Investment, and Shinhan Life -- to pool their outsource data and create dashboards based on those data. The system was built with natural language processing to crawl the web for certain keywords related to their business to discover market insights.

Shinhan DS collaborated with Samsung SDS in building this system. My position was an assistant manager of UX design. I interviewed with the four companies’ relations managers to surmise their business goals and manage their outputs concerning UI, graphics, developmental schedules and human resources. The platform launched as a website which is only accessible by Shinhan employees.
The goal
Each company’s dashboard focuses on their respective goals as a business:
Shinhan Bank company is for tracking their brand name reputation,
Shinhan Card company is for getting a sense of consumption behavior in the market,
Shinhan Investment is for tracking the Korean stock market index and news related with stock investment,
Shinhan Life insurance company is looking for keywords or products related with health.
The challenges
The dashboards should show real time data of words crawled from a diversity of sites from SNS to news sites. It is important to parse out different categories in order to show broad information first, so data were divided with colors to help users easily filter that which is most useful to them.
The solutions
Keywords or Key Performance Indicators for each company’s own interest or will be collected from each business and then crawled by machine in real time. In order to get a sense of the respective markets, graphics were used to emphasize the keywords in each entry, show words related to customers’ interests, and then categorize the words by color to easily indicate their relevance.
In order to track the interest trends, keywords rank changed weekly according to results. The program also shows how many articles or pages were found with certain words.
Shinhan Life insurance company is most interested in people’s general interest about health and then developing a product based on those trends. These trends need not be limited to keywords explicitly related to health specific disease. For example, if entries based on air quality often come up, it could show that there is a trend toward concern for respiratory health issues. Then the company could prepare insurance products or risk management analysis based on respiratory diseases.
Shinhan Investment already purchases access to reliable news data resources from Bloomberg and the like. However, data collected from social networks could be another powerful indicator of market trends, especially in tracking individual investors.
